Title:   Cornice Block with Mason's Mark: Doric
Category:   Architecture Misc.
Description:   Top is flat with a vertical step between a lower front and a higher back part. Cyma reversa bed mold, hawk's beak crown. Cutting for two Π-clamps at each end. In each end a cutting for an end dowel, which was set so as to secure the ends of two adjacent blocks, and was poured through a vertical channel cut in the end of one block. No trace of lead but remains of fine buff cement in the dowel holes. Cuttings of shift bars at each end, top and bottom. Surface finished with drove on visible parts. Top over lower front part smooth finished as though to take marble. Mason's marks on top perhaps from reuse: Ψ Γ Γ Χ.
Certainly from period of reuse are the shallow square cuttings in the four corners of the top ca. 0.08m square, presumably for table legs. It was perhaps the makers of the table who trimmed off the back corner of the block (the original back is rough). Whole of under surface well finished with drove. Anathyrosis very regular on one end, less regular but adequate on other. Shallow depression near middle of top toward front perhaps for shift bar used in setting sima. No trace of color; the block was probably not painted.
Hard travertine.
