Large Skyphos?: Italian?

Wall fragment, with lower handle attachment.

Wall nearly vertical, with vertical grooves bordered below by horizontal glazed groove above scraped groove. Below these is an ovolo painted in white and outlined in incision. Lower handle attachment preserves a round member emerging from a surrounding plastic element. Micaceous, reddish yellow fabric (5YR 7/6); shiny black glaze; miltos.

From a sizable pot of good quality. The combination of round and plastic handle elements occurs on a skyphos of the Plakettenvasen type from Isthmia (J. L. Caskey 1960, no. 1, pp. 168--172, pls. 54, 55) and a large kantharos from Metaponto (Giannotta 1983, p. 50, pl. XXXI). A ribbed body interrupted by a plain horizontal band with West Slope decoration is also a common feature of Plakettenvasen (see Dohrn 1985, pls. 67--75).

For the combination of ribbing and a painted ovolo see Forti 1965, pl. XXIII:c (Gnathia ware, from Bari). The shape may have been something like ibid., pl. XXVI:b, a large skyphos with vertical handles.
