Bowl With Moldmade Feet.

One foot and about half of body restored.

Large, moldmade shell feet with edges scored at attachment to body; deeply pierced on one side. Three groups of two concentric circles on underside: one at center, one just inside moldmade feet, one at outer edge of feet ( possibly serving as guide to positioning of feet). Deep body with straight wall. Rim flat on top, slightly inwardly thickened, with two scraped grooves below on outside. Painted decoration in white and pale buff. On upper wall, alternating boukranion and target (one of each fully preserved). Silhouette of boukranion in buff, with white overpainting across top of skull, along nose, and on eyes, and with fillet consisting of dotted white line ending in tassel hanging from each horn. Target is alternating white and buff circles, with white dot at center. Very micaceous, pink fabric (5YR 7/4); metallic black glaze with red patches below, shiny red inside; miltos.

Another fragment with an identical target on a black glaze ground: P 31949 (C 10:1). An identical foot: P 488 (late Hellenistic context). For other instances of contrasting glaze on inside and outside see 1665.

For hole pierced in side of shell foot see Samos XIV, p. 157, fig. 256:F. For boukranion cf. Hadjimichali 1971, p. 207, fig. 42 (probably Cretan); Corinth VII, iii, no. 129, p. 40, pl. 45; and, at the Agora, 1683. Shape as Callaghan 1978a, no. 83, p. 20, pl. 6 (Knossos, after 175) and, probably, PF VI, no. 71, p. 218, pls. 4, 10, 38.
