Krater Or Large Bowl: Pergamene?

One handle and part of wall.

Large, deep vessel, convex below, concave above. Vertical handle, round in section and deeply grooved. At the two attachments, plastic heads from the same mold: beardless head with thick hair. Dot of paint on left eye of left attachment; vertical lines under handle.

Deeply incised line runs diagonally down from attachments, turning toward the horizontal. Fine, hard fabric with no mica, reddish brown towards exterior (5YR 5/4), red towards interior (2.5YR 5/6); lustrous black glaze outside, red inside.

For contrasting exterior and interior glaze see 1665. Similar handles appear on Italian pans and strainers of Malacena ware, with plastic attachments between the handle attachments instead of below them (Beazley 1947, pp. 278--280; Morel 1981, Series 6311, p. 396, pl. 195). The thickness and angle of the wall, however, suggests that the piece comes from a larger vessel, possibly a krater (cf. Délos XXXI, no. 6005, p. 101, pl. 23 and, in gray ware, 1631).
