Top and part of instep preserved.

Concave strainer pierced with six holes in top. Edge of top surrounded by fine groove. Trace of handle on right ankle, seemingly not a ring handle. Sandal has three-pronged tongue (lingula) over the instep. At the side are six or seven thongs, partly overlapping, all running down towards the sole except the uppermost, which runs back towards the heel. Light reddish brown fabric, close to Attic (5YR 6/4); dull red glaze on outside, mostly missing; thinner brownish glaze inside.

Cf. Morrow 1985, pp. 118--120, pls. 106, 107. According to Morrow, the lingula first appears in Italy in the 4th and 3rd centuries; no certain Greek sandal with this feature dates before the middle of the 2nd century, later than the context of this piece.

Perhaps, then, the Agora piece is an Italian import, although the fabric and glaze are not unusual. For a probably Attic example see 1160.
