Dionysos.

Half of foot of cup, with face and part of hair of emblem.

Very shallow cup rests on ridge surrounded by scraped groove.

Four grooves preserved on exterior. Head of Dionysos turned to viewer's right. Fillet across forehead, with two small spheres (fruit?) flanked by two larger ones above it. Thick, curly, ropelike hair visible above and to right of face. Leaves(?) and broad fillet to right of face. Lustrous black glaze.

Similar, but smaller, is 1703, from a pitcher, probably imported. For head with heavy locks and garland, cf. Pagenstecher 1913, p. 59, fig. 71. For heads with brow fillets on emblems, see Studniczka 1919, pp. 117--118, figs. 15, 16. See Barr-Sharrar 1987, C 79--C 94 bis, pp. 52--56, pls. 26--30 for bronze Dionysos emblems; C 80--C 82, C 84--C 86 have similar fillet and fruits; see TC 5, p. 116, pl. 62 for Dionysos emblem on clay pyxis lid.
