Fragment, slightly domed. Glazed on underside. Max. dim. 0.077.
Athena (helmeted head, shoulders with aegis, raised right hand with spear) in three-quarter view to right. In front of her is a nude youth (back of head, part of right arm, start of body) to right. Behind him, at the shoulder level, an uncertain object. Preliminary sketch. Added clay: decoration on front of helmet; snakes of aegis; part of object behind youth. White: Athena's flesh; spear (flaked). Dilute glaze: surface between locks of hair.
Perhaps by the Eleusinion Painter. Cf. the figure of Athena on St. Petersburg St. 1792 (ARV2 1476, 1; Paralip. 496, 1; Addenda 381). The drawing on 1139 is not quite so careful.
