Four non-joining fragments, a and b of lip and bowl, c and d of floor. Glaze abraded on rim. Est. diam. of rim 0.225; max. dim. a) 0.13, b) 0.055, c) 0.042, d) 0.032; est. inner diam. of tondo 0.10. J. Neils, The Youthful Deeds of Theseus: Iconography and Iconology, Rome 1989, p. 175, cat. no. 148; LIMC VII, 1994, p. 928, no. 53, s.v. Theseus.

Deeds of Theseus. I, fragment c shows what looks like the hind legs and tail of the Marathonian Bull and the heel of one foot of Theseus, both to right. Around the tondo, stopped-maeander pattern. Fragment d (not illustrated) preserves more of the maeander and a bit of reserve that may be the exergue. Around the tondo, more deeds. Fragment b gives the head and raised left hand with stone of the Minotaur and one hand of

Theseus grabbing him. Above, on the right, the weapon from another deed. It looks like a club and may be the Kerkyon episode. Fragment a preserves part of the Sinis adventure: right hand of Theseus holding the bent pine tree and the filleted head of Sinis to left, who, to judge from his low position in the composition, sits on the ground. Next comes the Prokroustes combat (most of the wreathed head of Theseus, who wields the axe above his head, and the raised hand of his opponent at the lower break). A, Deeds of Theseus. On the far left of fragment a is part of a figure to left that is unidentifiable; then comes the upper part of Theseus, a wreath around his head, about to land a blow on Kerkyon, who aims a large stone at the hero. Around Kerkyon's head is a fillet. Fragment b preserves part of the Krommyon Sow episode: the drapery over outstretched arm of Theseus to right and the head of the sow facing. Fragment d preserves part of the leg of an animal (foreleg of bull[?]) and the feet of Theseus, both to right. Below the figures (c [not illustrated] and d), reserved line. Preliminary sketch. Dilute glaze: muscles. White: wreaths; fillets.

For Theseus' deeds during the second half of the 5th century B.C., see Neils, Youthful Deeds of Theseus, pp. 129--141; for the cycle, pp. 143--151; for the Krommyon Sow, see LIMC VI, 1992, pp. 139--142, s.v. Krommyon (E. Simantoni-Bournia).

The Calliope Painter (Beazley during his visit to the Agora in summer 1953; not in ARV2). The drawing on 1472 seems too rough to be by this painter.
