Title:   Marble Fragments: Casualty List
Category:   Inscriptions
Description:   Inscribed fragments.
Fragment ΕΛ 280 a), broken at left and below.
Anathyrosis at right. Cutting for T-clamp in top. Back smooth picked.
Stoichedon (lines 3 ff.)
Fragment ΒΔ 14 b), broken on all three sides but with original top and rough picked back preserved.
This would be part of the Athenian casualty list of which many other fragments survive. In particular this piece should go slightly to the left of I 6959, based on the canonical order of the Athenian Tribes. Since the latter preserves, in lines 9-10, the last letters of two words, the beginnings of which are on our new fragment, and since the minimum amount of space in line 2 between Pandionidos and Leontidos can be estimated (ca. 0.17m. from "Ρ" to "Λ"), it is possible to ascertain the number of letter spaces on lines 9-10, and to make tentative restorations of names there which are attested (in the 4th. century B.C.) as from the tribe of Pandionis. These names "ΚΤΕΣΙΧΑΡΕΣ" and "ΦΕΙΔΟΣΤΡΑΤΟΣ" are of course, not the only possibilities.
The reading of "ΑΘ" in our line 1 would indicate that the "ΑΓ" of I 6959 should be read "AI" and that we may restore the gap as "ΑΘ" (ΕΝ) ΑΙ".
In the left column the "-ΑΡΧΟΣ" of lines 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 may be restored as either "ΤΡΙΕΡ(ΑΡΧΟΣ) or ΤΑΧΣΙ(ΑΡΧΟΣ), either of which provides the same left margin. This margin would well coincide with the expected restoration of "ΑΙΛΕΙΔ]ΟΣ" in line 2.
Pentelic marble.
