Title: | Relief Fragment of Lamp: Emblema
Category: | Lamps | |
Description: | Preserved is the head of Athena Parthenos in relief left; broken off at neck, the nose chipped, and most of the crest of the helmet missing. The face is carefully modelled, the iris and pupil of the eye are indicated. In front of the ear a mass of curls escapes from beneath the helmet (cf. the Aspasios gem). The earring is a large oval drop, decorated with small indentations; a single curl can be seen between it and the edge of the neck piece. A band, widening toward the center, borders the helmet across the brows; it is decorated with small rosettes between two narrow ridges. A large rosette (chipped) covers the junction of this band with the border of the neck piece, which consists of two narrow ridges. At the upper left of the fragment is a trace apparently of the shoulder and the wing-feathers of the sphinx; behind is the winged horse, complete save for top of head, and wings. The space between the body of the horse and the rosette below is filled by the small upturned cheek-piece (upper part chipped) on which is represented a small nude figure carrying something in his bent left arm (?). Branching spirals cover the back of the helmet. Along the right edge of the fragment the start of the crest is preserved. Perhaps from the discus of a very large lamp. Dark pinkish-buff clay with lighter surfacing. Type XXVII of Corinth collection.
