Title:   Black Figure Amphora
ΤΙΤΛΟΣ:   Αμφορέας με παραστάσεις σφιγγών, του Ζωγράφου του Νέσσου. 620 – 610 π.Χ.
Category:   Pottery
Description:   One piece amphora. Mended from many pieces. Complete save for scattered small gaps in the body and chips from the base. The surface is severely weathered especially on one side.
On either side, a sphinx fills nearly the whole field. She is crouched on a broad band of glaze below which rays spring from the foot. The top of her head just misses a narrower band of glaze below the rim. Her forepaws reach forward to under one handle and her wing grazes the other. A space is left above and in front of her hind paws where the body does not touch ground; here the tail curls up from between the feet with dot rosettes on either side. Next to the lower handle attachment in the space between her head and forepaws is a decorative figure composed of tendrils and palmettes; probably traces of another behind her head. Behind the upper part of the wing more dot rosettes and a dotted zigzag.
Red is freely used and the interior drawing is done in careful incision (used for all borders between red and black but not for exterior contours). The face, neck and ear are red, with black eyebrow and pupil. The hair is caught in behind the ear by an incised band with zigzag pattern. It is crowned with a red fillet; below, it falls in tresses across the broad red upper part of the wing which is continuous over the breast. The legs and the lower part of the wing (with incised feathers) are black; the belly red.
Red is also used for parts of the decorative figure and incision for its interior drawing. On the rim were red incised rosettes and on the glazed handles are traces of red. The spreading ring foot was glazed on the outside save a reserved band at the lower edge. The rim is not flat-topped but curves in from its edge and is glazed inside for about its exterior height.
Attic orientalizing.
