Title:   Black Figure Pelike
Category:   Pottery
Description:   The foot broken away, the lip chipped and a few fragments missing from lower wall on reverse. Full deep body, the point of greatest diameter about half-way between handle and base; torus lip, set off from neck by a ridge; thickened band handles. Rays above foot. Red line around neck and level of upper handle attachment; and on body double line at level of bottom of panels.
A) Combat between two figures. At the right, a youthful figure nude save for the cloak tied around his waist, raises a two-bladed axe with which he is about to smite his opponent. The latter, a nude bearded figure, sinks to the ground, left, his right hand on a large stone, his left out-stretched. A tree, with tendrils, in the background; hanging in its branches a quiver, right, and a cloak, left. Leaning against the panel edge, right, a knotted club. Band of buds, above; single ground line below. Red for forehead hair of both figures, for dots on the hanging cloak, and for the fillet which ties the up-turned hair of the younger figure. White for large fruits on the tree, for details on the quiver, for the axe handle, for dot-rosettes on both garments, and white glaze over-painting for the rock. Considerable incision.
B) Dionysos between two satyrs. Bud pattern above and ground line below, as on A. Dionysos cloaked and wreathed, moves right, looking back left, and holding a long drinking horn in his left hand. He is flanked by dancing satyrs, both looking towards him. Added red for beards, for the forehead hair of the satyr at left, and for the tails of both satyrs; also for leaves of Dionysos' wreath. White for groups of dots on Dionysos' cloak, and for its hem, scalloped above.
ADDENDA Subject A: Theseus and Prokroustes. Foot wrongly restored; Cf. P 12551. Note This is the only black figure pelike which has rays above the foot. DVB/1950.
