Title:   Black Figure Olpe

Description:   Mended from many fragments; missing pieces from neck and upper part of body including upper right corner of panel, part of base and of body just above base.
Departure scene of soldier in full armour, spear in hand, helmet lowered, face right between two women who look toward him with veils held back. At the top of the panel, a band of blob palmettes; the rim glazed inside for 0.04m.; the ring foot unglazed beneath. Accessory red for band around edge of lip, for narrow band at top and at bottom of panel (the latter continuing round the body of the vase), also for a fillet around the warrior's helmet, for a broad fold on his short chiton and on each of the woman's cloaks. Traces of accessory white on the women's flesh; the embroidery on their garments indicated by incision.
Thin brownish black glaze, streaked and very much worn; buff clay.
Context:   Rectangular rockcut shaft.
