Title:   Black Figure Lekythos Fragment: Inscribed
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from three pieces. Upper break follows line of shoulder. Scene depicts warriors in combat. From left, white-plumed warrior rushes forward. His left arm is flung back so that one sees the interior of the shield with red border, suspension cord and the white thong by which it is held to the forearm (much broadened on the arm itself, perhaps a special binding). At the lower edge of fragment, another bit of the red border and another knot(?) in incision. He wears above his short chiton a corselet with incised spiral on the front, across which hang two white cord-ends. Below the cheek-piece of helmet and laid partly over a fringe of short incised strokes (beard?), are considerable traces of a white deposit. A herringbone is incised through the white of the plume, which ends below in a sort of square hook, mostly peeled away.

The fallen warrior is shown with closed eyes. White dots stud the base of his plume and that of the third warrior in whose carefully drawn hand the spear is balanced (his shield also red-bordered).
Incised contours only on shields and on the extended arm and the front of the corselet of the plumed warrior.
In the space above the fallen man, part of an inscription in glaze: <graphic>
