Title:   Red Figure Cup Fragment: Type C and Inscribed
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from three pieces; about half the medallion preserved, depicting diskobolos, and the stem to the junction with the foot. The boy's lower right arm, the legs below the thighs, and a bit from the middle of the back, missing.
Relief contours; reserved hairline; short locks round brow and one long one in dilute glaze on cheek. Small very narrow eye, the inner half entirely filled by the iris. No interior modelling. The surface once rubbed with pink. In red, the boy's wreath and the inscription above his head, to the right: <graphic> and behind him, to the left: <graphic> The round dot to the left of his head, above, might be the stain of an Ο but seems rather an accident.
The moment represented seems to be that at or just after the discus throw. Cf. Gardiner (1910), Greek Athletic Sports and Festivals., p. 333 ff. Fig. 89 gives the stage just before this (Beazley (1925), Attische Vasenmaler des Rotfigurigen Stils, p. 31, the Euergides painter, no. 6).
