Title:   Black Figure Skyphos Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   A section of rim and about half of upper part, including one handle, mended from many fragments. The head and hands of a flute player are preserved. To her left are three male figures, two possibly dancing, the center one bracing his left hand on his hip to carry an amphora on his left shoulder. To right of the woman, another dancing figure. Traces of the head of a water bird(?) below the handle. There are very faint traces of white on the flute player's face. Her hair may have been yellow at one time: now only a thick application of white is left, like that on her hands. White is used also for a wavy chaplet around the neck of the bearded figure behind her, and for the berries of the vine in the field. Red for forelocks, beards, napes of necks and for the fillet about the head of the woman.
Good black glaze on interior; reserved rim around inside of lip.
Cf. P 1549 with head of flute girl. Possibly from reverse of this vase.
