Agora Object: P 15842
Inventory Number:   P 15842
Section Number:   ΟΑ 1063
Title:   Red Figure Oinochoe
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Much of the front of the body with the scene preserved; the wall filled out to the shoulder, the foot entirely in plaster, something as P 15840 (ΟΑ 1061) but perhaps too low. Traces of both mastoi preserved on shoulder. For the shape cf. P 15840 and P 15841.
Reserved: scraped line at junction of foot and body, above ring; underside of foot.
Ornament: maeander band below scene, broken by checkerboard squares at irregular intervals; band not continuous around back of vase; probably no ornament under handle (back of vase not preserved).
Figured scene: helmeted female figure (thin Doric chiton girt above the overfold; helmet plume falling to the waist over long curling hair) mounting a chariot drawn by four horses. Before the horses, a youthful male figure (chlamys; sandals laced high) moves right, looking back left toward the team. (Head, shoulders and most of his right side missing). A small non-joining fragment, preserves a bit of maeander and checkboard border with part of some object, probably the toe of this figure's sandalled right foot.
Technique: relief contours throughout except for the charioteer's drapery, hair, and helmet crest. Drawing in fine black lines. A little brown shading on the side of the chariot. Hair black to brown; border of chiton black; also harness pole ornament. Horses' eyes filled in with brown around a black pupil; collars brown. Reins black where they cross the necks, but scratched through the glaze where they cross the ground.
