Title:   Red Figure Calyx Krater
Category:   Pottery
Description:   The greater part of one handle is gone; the rim seems to have been cut away, so neat is the break. Solidly founded ring foot, convex, with the upper part cut back to form a narrow groove; at the junction of foot and body, a convex ring. The interior is glazed with the exception of a reserved band below the rim. On the exterior, at the top of the swelling lower part of the body is a band of saltire squares and maeander to right, surmounted by a reserved line. The inner surface of the handles and the space below them is unpainted.
On the obverse, Dionysos in the center is proceeding right but looking back. He is long-haired, and wears chiton and dark bordered himation, resting his left hand on a thyrsos, while his right holds a kantharos. At the left, a maeanad with oinochoe and torch; at the right, a nude satyr proceeds right and plays the pipes. The woman wears a sphendone, the satyr a wreath.
On the reverse, three boys wrapped in cloaks are standing quietly in conversation. The boy on the left may be holding an alabastron.
The glaze is poor; worn off in great part, especially on the sides above the handles and around the figures, outside of the contour stripes. No relief contours except for the features of the figures on the obverse. Dilute glaze for inner markings on the satyr's body.
