Title:   Black Figure Cup Fragments
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Two fragments, mended from four, plus a single fragment, preserve the foot, stem and a small part of the walls. The outer edge of the foot is almost vertical, and only slightly flaring; the inner face rises gently toward the hollow of the stem. In the tondo, a Nike, her knees bent as in flight. Her body is preserved from the waist down, also the ends of her wings. She wears a chiton with overfold. Incised lines for feathers and folds of garment. The tondo is bound by two narrow reserved bands. On the exterior a group of three figures can be distinguished, from left to right as follows: a female figure a) stands facing right toward armed combat between two male figures b) and c); b) strikes right, wielding either sword or spear and carrying a shield (with an apron?); c), his opponent, falls back right. Crude incision for folds of woman's garment, some anatomical details, etc. Reserved bands around the bottom of the figure scene. The paint has fired variously from red to black, usually with a brownish cast. The outer edge of the foot is reserved but reddened; some chips are observable here that existed before the red wash was applied.
On the underside of the foot the resting surface is reserved, the inner face painted, and the hollow of the stem reserved, but apparently reddened.
