Title:   Neck Amphora
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from many pieces; considerable fragments of lower wall, and small piece from shoulder missing. Restored in plaster. Slender neck-amphora on high flaring ring foot. Broad flaring rim with angular profile. Thickened band handles. Decoration: on foot, checker pattern; on lower body, tall rays, the alternate rays springing not from the base but from a point half way up the zone. Next above, a band of open maeander; then a broad zone filled by large reversed spirals in pairs, each pair joined to the next by a double palmette motif; palmettes also at the mid-point of each pair. On the shoulder, tongues. On the neck, a panel on each side; in it, the forepart of a bull, with one hoof raised, to right. Filling ornament, zigzags, swastikas, diminishing triangles and diamond motif. On the outer face of the rim, triangles.
Yellow-buff clay; the glaze thin and worn; fired dull black to red. Ample use of added red, brilliant when found, but extremely fugitive. Traces remain on the bulls' necks, on the tongue pattern, on the broad band below the tongues, and on the hearts of the palmettes.
