Title:   Amphora Fragments

Description:   Dipylon amphora. Several joining fragments preserve the neck and rim, complete except for chips, with also a little of the shoulder and the lower part of one handle. The base is also preserved, in three joining fragments, giving the full circle; the floor within broken out. Nothing remains of the side walls. Heavy rounded rim; ring base. On the neck, front and back, a large panel, each divided into four. At the center, a vertical band of hatched maeander; to either side, above, a wheel pattern; below, a horse looking in. Filling and band ornaments: zigzags, dotted diamond pattern, hatched lozenges, etc. On the rim, a row of dots; around the neck, below the rim and above the upper handle attachment, a zone of dotted diamond pattern. On the handle, St. Andrew's crosses, and bands. On the shoulder, hatched triangles above a double zigzag.
Heavy pinkish to buff fabric with many white bits. The black glaze dull and in part worn off; the base glazed outside.
