Title:   Lid Fragments

Description:   a) Fragment from rim and top of lid. Top slightly convex; plain downcurved rim, very slightly concave. Four zones, divided by thin glazed lines. Outside, band of black squares; then broad band of added purple; then curved hooks broken by panels of two vertical lines on each side of a purple rectangle (purple directly on clay). Vertical lines on innermost zone visible. Tips of rays (at center).
b) Knob, chipped on one side; part of lid mended on; probably belongs with lid. Pear-shaped knob with concave neck; slightly projecting disk on top. Glazed circle on disk; around top of knob, a band of step pattern enclosed by three lines above and below; then zone of palmettes with purple and black petals treated as blossoms drooping from stalks; one petal only where space limited. Below, three lines, a row of squares; one band on neck. Double series of rays on lid.
Pinkish-buff clay; impurities; black glaze.
Context:   Well.
