Title:   Panathenaic Amphora Fragments: Inscribed

Description:   a) Preserves part of the neck and of the figure of Athena to right, with part of the helmeted head and the right hand. White for the flesh; dilute glaze for the hair. Only the neck glazed inside.
b) From the right side of the panel, with a bit of the right column, and three letters of the archon's name.
Dark pink clay.
The archon might be either Aristodemos (352-351 B.C.) or Pythodelos (336-335 B.C.). Both names occur on Panathenaic amphoras of the Nikomachos group, to which these fragments might belong on stylistic grounds. Cf., e.g., Louvre MN 706 (CVA g, pl. 5, 8-14), Theophrastos archon (340-339 B.C.), Beazley, Nikomachos group no. 3, AJA 47 (1943), p. 458.
