Agora Object: P 24673
Inventory Number:   P 24673
Section Number:   ΣΑ 2884
Title:   Black Figure Olpe
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from many pieces; profile almost complete. Missing: most of mouth, of back and of foot, handle and much of the front.
Panel: above, palmettes and lotus flower band; below and at the sides a glaze line. A reserved band around the lower part of the vase; reserved triangle on the back.
Scene: a man and a youth on a couch to left, looking at each other; the man is holding a kantharos in the left hand, the youth a stemmed bowl(?) in his left. Both wear wreaths and himatia. On the table in front of the couch, meat and something else in white (cake?). On the right of the couch stands a youth to left, having his himation wrapt around his waist and covering only his body to mid thighs; right arm raised, with his left he holds an ivy branch; he also wears a wreath. On the left a flute-girl right wearing chiton and himation.
Much use of red and white.
By the Amasis painter in his middle period (540-530 B.C.). If so, it is the first time we have a symposion scene by him. The shape of the kantharos and the way the standing young man is wearing his himation seems to occur also for the first time in his work. For the heads cf. especially the amphora Louvre F 36, CVA, pl. 17:3.
The feasting people might be Dionysos and Ikarios or Herakles.
Context:   Well in Stoa Shop III.
Handling:   The rim piece (1) and one small sherd to the right of the rim fragment [6] (3), as they protrude above the main body of the vessel, are prone to knocks and breakage and therefore must be protected. The vase is a bit unstable on its base and may require stabilization.
