Agora Object: P 2700
Inventory Number:   P 2700
Section Number:   Α 768
Title:   Black Figure Olpe
Category:   Pottery
Description:   None of the base, back or handle preserved and large pieces missing from lip and front. Restored in plaster; three fragments not included in restoration preserved separately. Possibly depicts boxers(?). Between the neck and shoulder of the vase, with the heads of the figures and the lower fragments, with their legs, there is no direct join so that the height of the vase and the proportions of the figures can only be conjectured. The rounded lip black glazed and the neck within for ca. 0.03m. Below the figures, two black glazed bands. There are no remains of other frames or borders; the figures seem to have been spread out over the whole front of the vase.
Of the two figures, the male to the left has most of the head, the body from chest to hips, parts of his legs and of his left arm and his lower right arm. The male to the [right] lacks his left arm, fragments from body and legs and a small piece of his right arm. On the upraised hand and arm of the figure to the left are incisions suggesting a cestus. The right hand figure is bearded and wears a fillet.
Brown wash. The glaze very irregularly fired from brownish red to black; the whole effect slovenly.
ADDENDA More pieces, including right foot of left figure and pieces at back, found Nov. 1995 in tins of "coarse" pottery.
