Title:   Black Figure Plate Fragments: Inscribed

Description:   Two fragments; the larger mended from six pieces. More than half the medallion preserved and a quarter of the rim. Medallion scene depicts Herakles and Amazons(?).
On the larger piece: a fully armed figure, seen from the back, runs right, looking left, a spear in the raised right hand. At the feet, the helmet and part of the body of a fallen companion.
On the smaller fragment, to the left is Herakles in his lion skin, holding his drawn sword in his right hand. Above him in the field, two letters in brown glaze: ΟΙ or possibly ΟΓ.
The rim black, its vertical inner edge reserved. Beneath, the outer part reserved and moulded, covered with pink wash; a thin black line midway between rim and foot. The heavily moulded ring foot is glazed black with reserved bands washed with pink.
The center of the plate has a cream-colored slip, heavy but worn. The figures painted in rather dull black here and there shading to brown. Coarse heavy incision for the details.
