Title:   Black Figure Oinochoe
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from many fragments; complete except for small holes in body.
Shape 1 oinochoe, with offset neck and trefoil mouth. Flaring ring foot, raised line at juncture of body and neck. Deeply pinched mouth, very high-swung thick strap handle. Underside of foot reserved. Shape similar to Agora XII, no. 100, 525-500 B.C.
Decoration covers two-thirds of body. Lowest part of body black-glazed; shoulder decorated with thick black lines (debased tongues) set off from decorated zone by a line of dilute glaze. Painted scene on front only. In center a nude Herakles moves right, escorting a bull with his left hand grasping a horn and his right on the animal's chest. Both are seen in profile. Herakles' club is visible on ground behind bull. They approach, to the right, an armed Athena seated left. She wears the aegis, with a high crested helmet held in her outstretched right hand, her spear held horizontally in her left, with her shield on the ground leaning against her knee. She sits on a small high, solid stool. Behind Herakles and the bull, balancing Athena, is Hermes, also seated (right) on a stool. He wears a cap and his winged sandals. His right hand holds the caduceus and his left is held out, gesturing.
Fine incision for details of males (hair, eyes, muscles) and bull. Added white for Athena: arms, face (worn off), and feet; also two large dots on shield. Looping tendrils, presumably debased vines, in background of scene and continuing around the reserved zone in the back, below the handle.
