Title:   Black Figure Tripod Pyxis Fragments
Category:   Pottery
Description:   a) Fragment appears to come from some sort of stand, possibly tripodal; it broadens above to a concave insloping surface, smoothed and having a broken edge projecting inward. It is broken left and below, but has finished purpled edge right.
Theseus killing Minotaur in presence of companions. A youth and a maiden on right (complete) side; upper part of another maiden preserved left; no feet preserved. Beast bowed under close grip; sword thrust into neck; outflung arms, a stone in each hand. Maidens appear to be taking part; youth stands apart with staff. Curious filling ornament: vertical rows of small dots.
Free use of incision and of applied color: white on maidens and stones; purple on chiton and fillet of Theseus, peplos of Ariadne(?) left; hair of youth, right. Inside, wash of the clay.
Clay, fine pink. Surface badly damaged.
Cf. also P 418 and P 1122 (probably same pot).
Cf. Collignon and Couve (1902-1904), no. 837 (475), pl. XXXIV.
ADDENDA b) Fragment joining with this, completing left side, found later (Section Δ' 65, 15 March 1932: among sherds from north face of polygonal wall at 24/Κ. Basket from 0.25m. below top of wall to level of hearth: late Roman sherds). P.H. 0.077; P.W. 0.059; Th. (at top) 0.016. This fragment preserves the flaring foot of the stand (like that of P 418) and completes the scene: legs of Theseus, with clothing(?) resting on ground beneath; lower part of body of maiden, left, and figure of another youth behind her, at finished edge.
Context:   From cleaning cellars. Second fragment from basket of sherds from north face of polygonal wall.
