ΤΙΤΛΟΣ:   Τριφυλλόστομη οινοχόη με παράσταση αντιμέτωπων σφιγγών 750 π.Χ. περίπου

Description:   Very fragmentary but only the lip entirely missing. Restored in plaster. Double-round handle, lip to shoulder. Low ring foot.
Above the foot, broad rays. On the body, two sphinxes facing each other. The faces are drawn in outline. The wing feathers of the sphinx to the left are incised; of the sphinx to the right rendered in outline. The hair falls in a heavy mass down each side of the neck, which is reserved, and decorated in both cases by a necklace rendered by a triple horizontal line. Between the sphinxes is a large palmette cross, large palmettes above and below, filling the inside of an 8-shaped figure; horizontal palmettes at the crossing. Above, triangle and lozenge star.
Panel decoration on the neck; part of a large lotus is preserved; filling ornaments, zigzags and diamonds.
Narrow, vertical stripes on the handles.
Fine pinkish buff clay with buff surface. Glaze dull brownish black.
Ζ 1660: Joining fragment of left hand sphinx, giving front part of body, with part of neck, lower necklace, and spring of her wing feathers. Also a fragment of floral ornament (from the back?).
ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ:   Πρωτοαττική τριφυλλόστομη οινοχόη. Λείπουν θραύσματα από τη βάση, το σώμα και το στόμιο του αγγείου. Αποκατεστημένη με γύψο. Φέρει διακόσμηση δύο αντικριστών σφιγγών, μεταξύ των οποίων υπάρχει μεγάλος σταυρός από ανθέμια.
Context:   Between well and bothros. Later fragment: N.E. corner of cemetery, stone packing in corner.
