Title:   Vessel Fragment
ΤΙΤΛΟΣ:   Τμήμα κλειστού αγγείου που διατηρεί παράσταση ανδρικών ποδιών 650 π.X. περίπου
Category:   Pottery
Description:   a) Fragment of very large pot: Protoattic? Mended from two pieces.
Legs of two figures running, passing each other in opposite directions. Painted brown with heavy outlines against buff ground. When found, the surface between the outlines was covered with a soft powdery purple which disappeared when the sherds were placed in water. Where the leg of one figure crosses that of the other, a dim outline indicates that the portions not seen were drawn complete.
Pinkish-buff clay, finely finished surface. Inside unpainted.
Cf. Praisos plate, Pfuhl (1923), fig. 57.
ADDENDA a) Part of a third figure to the right in fragment a). Lustrous black paint outlines; flesh painted in a color that had a soft purple surface when first excavated but that disappeared when the sherds were washed, leaving a dull reddish-brown. Traces of erroneous preliminary drawing, which were scratched away between the left pair of legs and erased and then covered with paint in the other cases.
Ca. middle of 7th c. B.C.
