Description: | Mended from several fragments; one handle and parts of rim and body missing. Warped in firing: oval at rim. Pattern of bands different on two sides of vase; painted in brownish-black glaze, nearly all disappeared: A) On shoulder: heads and long necks of waterbirds, right; around rim: diagonal lines crossing to form diamond pattern, with small rays top and bottom. B) On shoulder: pairs of vertical zigzags, alternating with dot rosettes; around rim: pairs of spirals, springing from outlined rays, and joined by bands; solid rays above. On handle, S-spirals. Rays around base, large, irregular, and widely set, reach nearly to middle of body. Low foot, depressed in center, decorated with circles. Rather coarse pink clay. Cream slip outside. Inside black glazed, save for reserved ring around center. Glaze nearly gone, as on exterior. Cf. P 894, and the Vourva skyphos (AM 15 (1890), pl. X), on which the same theme is developed. Early Orientalizing style. | |
