Title:   Black Figure Lebes Gamikos
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mended from many pieces; about three-quarters of the neck and rim, fragments from the walls, and all of the base missing. Many of the parts do not join. Traces of burning. Inside unglazed except the neck. Lip flat on top, reserved; purple line inside; outer edge moulded in three degrees, upper and lower purple, middle reserved. A moulded ring, purple, at the base of the neck, and two purple lines around the body below the figured panels. Double horizontal handles rising vertically from the shoulder, the attachments of both preserved, and about half of one handle. Front and back panels repeat the same scene, framed above by a tongue pattern: two youths, right, in a quadriga. Both wear himatia. The nearer figure drives, holding reins and whip; the farther figure rests his left hand on the chariot rail. In the field above, a bird flies left. Incision. Purple on ears and manes of all horses; tails of two; parts of harness; two bands on chariot; fillets of youths, and border of himation.
Pink clay; fine orange surface. Glaze metallic, uneven.
