Title:   Bowl Fragments with Paint Decoration
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Two non-joining fragments preserve perhaps one-third of the rim and some of the upper wall of a Late Roman D bowl. Restored in plaster. Keel is unusually marked for a bowl of this type; rim is slightly convex in profile with three wheel-run grooves just below lip, and one just above the keel. The familiar horizontal ribbed lug is elaborated by a broad vertical loop handle, with five ribs, which rises just below the horizontal handle, swings up a little above the rim, and is attached just below the lip.
Coarse, pinkish-buff clay; dull glaze-paint, red on inside and upper side walls, brownish-yellow on rim; traces of spiral ornament on rim, in white.
ADDENDA Four small non-joining fragments (c-f), including bits of keel and side walls, were originally connected to P 8496. But these fragments do not belong; from a smaller bowl; returned to Tin 171.
