Title:   Herm Head
Category:   Sculpture
Description:   Bearded herm head of Archaic type. Back of head broken away above, hair around brow damaged, nose and chin broken away, surface damaged. Full height preserved. Front of neck forms a tongue (width broken), behind which the marble has been cut away; end of tongue, smooth finished; cut back surfaces, rough-picked: arrangement for setting head on the herm (cutting for vertical dowel, horizontal pour channel).
Hair and beard stylized in way lines; braid round head; tight curls round face; locks of hair falling behind ears. Across the back, behind these locks, the crinkled surface of the long hair is cut off by a plain, smooth-finished band, 0.033m. wide.
Island marble.
Drilled for setting on base 1956.
In October 1954 the head was cleaned to remove a dark wax deposit that seams to have been on the head when it was found. It was discovered that the nose was broken and repaired at some time before the head was built into the modern house-wall in which it was found. Under the mortar, the broken surface of the nose appeared to have been rubbed smooth to a slightly convex surface and then picked to give a purchase to cement or stucco. A round hole, 0.006m. in diameter was bored in at the point where the tip of the nose would have projected. No dowel was found in this hole (only "red earth") and there are no iron stains. The joint surface has the same patina as adjacent worked surface of the face.
