Title: | Votive Relief Fragment: Aphrodite
Category: | Sculpture | |
Description: | Preserved are upper right corner (BE 103) and joining section to lower left (BE 61). Broken diagonally above, at left side, and below. Votive relief with simple fillet and ovolo molding above. Narrow frame at left side. In upper right corner, low relief profile female head facing left and wearing a veil which flutters back behind her. Above her head, and disappearing behind the relief frame, is the upper part of a ladder, two vertical pieces and traces of two horizontal struts visible. In her extended right hand she holds a vase by the foot. The vase compares to late fifth century thurible or incense burners. White marble with small crystals, probably Pentelic. Late fifth century B.C. (410-400 B.C. ?). Similar representations on vases of the early and middle fourth century (cf. Metzger (1951), Les Représentations, pl. VII) identify the scene depicted as Aphrodite descending a ladder, carrying an incense burner. The scenes on the vases have sometimes been connected with the cult of Aphrodite and Adonis (cf. Hauser, ÖJh (1909), pp. 90 ff.; Festschrift Amelung, pp. 262 ff. (Watzinger).
