Agora Object: S 462
Inventory Number:   S 462
Section Number:   Β 528
Title:   Draped Female Figure
Category:   Sculpture
Description:   Mended from many pieces; the head, set in a large, rough-picked socket, is missing. Missing also are part of the upper left arm, the left hand, the right arm and shoulder, most of the back above the hips, the right foot (doweled on, the dowel remains) with part of the plinth beneath it, and fragments from the right leg.
A life-sized figure, standing with her weight on her left foot, her right foot drawn back, from the position of the dowel probably represented with the toes only on the ground. She wears a thin high-girt chiton (cf. S 473); buttons on the left shoulder indicate a sleeve; at the front is a hole for attaching a metal clas p, which fastened the girdle. Wrapped around the lower left arm, passing across the back at the waist, and across the front at the hips, to be held by the lost left hand (?), is a cloak of much heavier material, worked in deep broad folds.
Pentelic marble.
Notes:   1.00m. below modern surface
Context:   The upper part found in late Roman fill, about 1.00m. below modern surface, found with S 463 (Β 529). Traces of coarse reddish cement suggest that this statue had been built into the destroyed upper part of the nearby heavy Roman wall.
The lower part, together with many small fragments belonging, was found built into the wall. It is somewhat blackened from a modern cesspool in the bedrock above.
