The 1947 excavation lasted from March 10 to November 1. The efforts were concentrated on completing the exploration of areas that had already been opened up before The War, and in clearing a site for the Agora museum. The work was therefore confined to three areas: the southwest corner, the north slope of the Areopagus and the large area to the west of the Areopagus.; The 1948 excavation started on March 8 and was to continue through April. Work was concentrated on two objectives: first the clearance of the ancient road that ran southward from the southwest corner of the Agora past the west ends of the Middle Stoa and of the Fountain House; second, the complete exploration of the area to the west of the Areopagus, designated as a site for the permanent museum. The understanding of the importance of this area however reopened the question of where to build the museum.","" "","8 Mar-26 Apr 1948","1948 ΟΟ","Checked","","Margaret Crosby","Agora:ReportPage:1948-ΟΟ-1::/Agora/Reports/1948 ΟΟ/1948 ΟΟ 001.jpg::1586::2048","Section ΟΟ 1948","Agora","Agora:Report:1948 ΟΟ","Report","","Work in Section ΟΟ was concentrated on the east and west ends of the north side of the section: parts of the ancient east-west street were explored; ca 20 meters of the Great Drain was clearly exposed; remains of a house (House E) from the 4th century and Hellenistic period, with cistern (Cistern A), water storage tank and a well (Well I) were found; the Roman Bath (Building A and Hypocaust area) was further explored, and a well in the central court (Well II) dug out; a trial cut was dug in a long, narrow poros building with a large open yard and a series of small rooms; and an early Geometric grave was found and excavated.",""
