Title:   Column Fragment
Category:   Architecture Marble
Description:   Probably from a ciborium. Broken top and bottom. A smaller joining piece was built into the vault of Tomb 6.
Tow indentations for crosses, one above the other. The ends more deeply sunk, each with a heavy lead dowel for attachment. Scattered around the front surface of the column are at least 40 small drill holes, filled with lead plugs. In one of the plugs a silver (?) pin for attaching a small object; in some others, traces of bronze pins.
Fine grained black marble, heavily veined with white; probably from Tinos. When struck with a hammer the marble gives off a sulfurous smell.
