Title:   Frieze Block

Description:   Both ends and top cut away. Block comprised three triglyphs and two metopes with a triglyph in the middle. Both ends and top cut away. The block rested on a raised bearing surface in its middle above the column. Back of block rough-picked; face of metope shows light marks of toothed chisel; flat faces of triglyph finished with toothed chisel, oblique faces with drove. Bottom of central triglyph undercut beneath glyphs; relieving surface under front edge of block. Undercutting for shift bar at middle of edge of the original underside, 0.03m. x 0.08m x. 0.07m. deep, centered 0.48m. from one another, and from a later reuse two small square dowel holes which still retain iron.

Context:   Reused in south outer wall of Roman Agora between fountain and S.W. corner of the building. This, A 3570 and A 3571 stand upright on the toichobate imbedded in a wall made of miscellaneous ancient blocks supplemented with field stones, broken tiles and coarse mortar.
