Hellenistic Kantharos.

P 31878 a, b

One-third of rim, with handle attachment (a) and part of handle (b, not illustrated) preserved.

Large vessel with incurved rim, either a large Corinthian skyphos or a Kabeiric kantharos. Strap handle attached below rim, attachment flanked by plastic tabs. Handle fragment b has triangular spur. Very fine, hard, slightly micaceous, red fabric (2.5YR 5/6); slightly metallic black glaze.

Shape as Kabirion III, nos. 126, 127, 129, p. 131, pl. 8, but larger. Large, figured Kabeiric cups sometimes have handle spurs (Kabirion I, passim) but have ring handles rather than strap handles. Possibly an Attic copy of a Boiotian shape, but if Attic, it is a hapax.
