Type A Pyxis.

Foot and lower body preserved.

Ring foot with three wide areas cut away to make tripod support; rounded resting surface; slightly convex underside. Cylindrical body, slightly concave. Fairly hard, very micaceous, grainy, reddish yellow fabric (5YR 6/6) with white inclusions; dull ocher glaze with black areas, dull black inside; finger marks on lower body.

Bases of this type are common on Type A pyxides, most of which date, however, to the 5th century (e.g. Richter and Milne 1935, p. 21, fig. 142; Roberts 1978, p. 211, fig. 10:e) but are also found on 4th-century red-figured pyxides (Schefold 1934, no. 581, p. 59, pl. 17) and cylindrical wooden containers (Rieth 1955, col. 11, figs. 2:c, f, h [ca. 360, from Taman], 7:e [from Kerch]).
