Title:   Marble Fragment
Category:   Inscriptions
Description:   Inscribed fragment; twice used as Ionic capital.
Originally the crowning block of a small monument or stele, on the front face the projecting moulding is preserved, and below a curved line marking the projection of a relief ornament (?). Part of the top moulding on the right face is also preserved. The block has a smooth finished top and bottom. On the front face of the block there are traces of an inscription with four letters.
At a later time another inscription was written on the top face of the stone; the lower and right edges show rough pick marks where the mouldings were hacked away.
On the rough broken surface of the left face there is a third inscription with five letters.
Fragment of an Ionic column capital bearing inscriptions which were written on it after it had been broken and reduced to its present shape.
Pentelic marble.
ADDENDA: The main inscription is on the top surface of the capital where an area has been specially smoothed down to receive it. Two false starts were made previously on the unsmoothed surface. The first never got beyond the letter "Φ"; in the second the word "ΦΙΛΟΙ" was written out and enclosed in a decorative frame, but then erased except for part of the frame and the initial "Φ" most of which still remains. Finally the surface was smoothed down and the main inscription was written. This is in two parts, the first written in finer, shaper letters, the second in larger coarser ones.
There is a secondary inscription on the broken left side of the capital in large coarse letters.
Finally, on the bolster side of the capital there are three or four marks which somewhat resemble letters but which can hardly be counted as an inscription.
Context:   Found in modern cellar wall, over the northeastern part of the Odeion.
