Inventory Number:   P 1902

Title:   Jug with Paint Decoration
Category:   Pottery
Description:   A fragment of the rim and one of the neck missing.
Low base with flat under- surface, unglazed. Swelling sides, trefoil lip, ribbon handle.
In an oval frame with transverse bars between double lines is a lion marchant right with uplifted, curling tail and bristling mane. His mouth is open and shows two rows of teeth. From behind issues a fanciful curving design, perhaps intended to represent a vine-stem. Below the ground line, two double wavy lines may represent water. Other loops and triangles hang in the field from the oval frame. Outside of the main design on either side, spiral and tuft patterns. The chief outline of the drawing is done in blue; the scales and spots of the lion are alternately blue and green, as are the segments of the vine(?) tendril.
Buff clay; yellow glaze on interior; white on exterior.
