Title:   Black Figure Chalice Fragment

Description:   Fragment from rim.
Preserved part of head and shoulders of sphinx, facing left. Top of head chipped away, with rim projection at this point. Break at left edge of fragment cuts off front of face and breast. Part of a rosette in field under chin. Preserved to right, curve of wing against body, and another rosette over back. Head and body in applied purple, except for eyes, hair, border of wing, and a sort of collar. The hair falls straight in long curls. On top of this is incised the volute-like ear, and a fillet(?). Incision freely and carelessly used, for all interior drawing, and all outlines except that of the right rosette. Painted rather carelessly. Actual rim flat-topped with plain outward projection, the outside of which is ornamented above by a row of short strokes in glaze, the receding underpart by a band of thin glaze. Inside pot, glazed band 0.022m. wide.
