Title:   Black Figure Olpe

Description:   Part of foot missing and restored in plaster; dented on Athena's shield and below lower handle attachment. Thick mouth with curved outline; band handle rooted on lip above with two knobs on each side of the attachment. Narrow ovoid body; flaring disk foot with a concave underside having a sunken center.
In a panel, Dionysos and Athena confronting. Dionysos wears wreath and himation; he holds vine branches and rhyton. Athena wears helmet, himation and a chiton and holds spear and shield; leg as shield device. The garments of both are decorated with large dots and groups of small ones. The picture is framed by lines and above it there is a band of two rows of dots divided horizontally. Above the panel there is a red line; another red line runs all around the vase just below the panel. White for a broad band in Dionysos himation, for Athena's face and the device of her shield and for a row of dots at the base of her crest. Red for Dionysos's beard, the berries of his wreath, a band on Athena's helmet, the edge of her shield, the ornament of the garments. Some incision.
Pinkish-buff clay; unevenly fired glaze (brown, gray, black), a good deal of which now gone.
