Description: | Single fragment preserving almost all of base and lower part of one side of bowl. Shallow conical form, thick sloping foot with slight spike below. Rather poor finish. Light brown clay with scattered red grits. On inside, light yellow glaze over a white slip. Exterior unglazed except at top, bearing a dark red slip, patchy at bottom, with burnt streaks on wall. Coarse sgraffito patterns on inside: five wavy gouged lines radiating from center (compass-point and small circle present); between these, radiating double-V patterns with internal stippling. Dark brown paint stripes over the incisions. Same ware as P 4481, etc.; cf. P 35765. Probably from West Greece (or Italy?). 13th century? Waagé, Hesperia 2 (1933), p. 317, fig. 13,b. | |
