Title:   Chalice Fragments with Paint Decoration: Naukratite

Description:   Two fragments probably from the same vase; both broken all around. From an open vase. The inside is covered with brown glaze on which are two horizontal bands of white paint (of different width on the two fragments). On the outside, animal(?) figures are painted in brown on white; from one sherd the paint has flaked somewhat from the outside.
Clay buff, crumbly, and slightly micaceous.

ADDENDA a) Chin and neck of sphinx. b) Lion. Perhaps not from the same pot as different subjects on opposite sides are not usual. (R. Cook 1955).
