Title: | Red Figure Column Krater Fragments: Inscribed
Category: | Pottery | |
Description: | Fragments from a pot of uncertain shape, possibly a column krater. The glaze inside is thick, but somewhat streaked, and metallic; peeled in spots. The representation - human limbs; a goat; lion-skins, and uncertain scraps - seems far from comprehensible. The technique, however, is highly characteristic: the drawing is broad, the relief contours, used throughout, are very heavy. Brown for lion-skins; also for a narrow horizontal band; red to edge this band, and for letters scattered in the field. Probably from a scene of Herakles and the centaurs. Cf. Beazley (1933), Der Kleophrades Maler, no. 44, pls. 22, 23.
Notes: | Another fragment, Γ 1122, catalogued as P 4245, found May 7, 1935, at 105-114/ΙΓ-ΙΖ, in Byz. fill, shows exactly the same technical characteristics, but belongs possibly to another pot: the fabric is very slightly thicker. On it, the buttocks and the very long large tail of a silen, left. Remains of three letters, painted in red, in the field. P.H. 0.081; P.W. 0.043.
