Title:   Red Figure Stamnos Fragment

Description:   From the shoulder of a closed vase, probably the same shape as P 7240, which the fabric closely resembles. Traces of burning. Above, a border of squared tongues. Below, Herakles, his body in front view, looking left. His right arm is outstretched, his left arm bent; in his left hand he holds his club, which rests agains his shoulder. Behind the bent left elbow can be seen his lion skin (draped over a rock against which he is relcining(?). Hair outline incised. Very heavy relief contour for other outlines. Inner drawing partly in sketch-lines; partly in dilute glaze. Dilute wash on the pelt.
ADDENDA "Earliest Kleophrades (manner of Euthymides) like the vases publsihed by Miss Richter." (letter form J.D. Beazley, Oct. 1, 1936).
Not from a psykter (as ARV, p. 125, no. 59; CB II, p. 8, no. C5) but from a stamnos. (A. Ashmead, May 20, 1957).
