Title: | Head of Male Figure
Category: | Sculpture | |
Description: | Intact except for very minor chips on hair. Broken off at bottom of neck. A youthful male portrait (?) head on a herm or rectangular shaft, part of the right side of which is preserved and a bit at the back. The short hair is held in place by a fillet, which is knotted at the back. The features are classic, but the mouth unusually small and the eyes somewhat deep-set. The workmanship is capable, but there is little or no modeling. Very smoothly finished surface almost polished. Pentelic marble. Drilled for setting on base September 1959. Missing since 20 August 1960, apparently stolen, along with the substantial base on which it was set, on the preceding evening. The base was later found.
